On June 4, 1919, Congress passed the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote. It would take more than a year for the states to ratify the amendment and for it to become law.
On June 16, 1919, Kansas ratified the 19th Amendment, the fourth state in the nation to do so. The approval of thirty-six states was needed to ratify the 19th Amendment, which went into effect on August 26, 1920.
Eight years earlier, however, Kansas had granted full suffrage to women when Kansas voters approved the Equal Suffrage Amendment to the Kansas State Constitution on November 5, 1912.
